Press Release: At St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Melinda Katz supports redevelopment of the Rockaways
This weekend, during their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Melinda Katz visited the Rockaways, a community still struggling from the devastating impact of Hurricane Sandy. During the parade, Melinda spoke with local leaders, residents, and first responders from the area about the process of rebuilding after the storm. What is clear is that the city needs to do a better job at working with the community and hearing their concerns before making decisions on redevelopment.
Melinda said, “There is clearly frustration that the priorities of the folks who live there are not being heard or taken into account during the decision making process. We need to do better. It is critical that community leaders and residents of the Rockaways play a fundamental role in the redevelopment of their neighborhood. The central purpose of rebuilding the Rockaways after the storm must be to make this community both a safe and comfortable place to live for years into the future. Without direct community input, the true needs of the neighborhood cannot be correctly understood or sufficiently resolved.”
